It may sound obvious, but it reflects a reality well known to anyone working in metal recycling: scrap is the unintended by-product of industrial activity and our everyday consumption. It begins its life as waste and only becomes a raw material because there is a way to recover and reuse it and, above all, because there is someone willing to buy it.

Even within the full spirit of the circular economy, it is important not to forget this. Scrap is collected, processed, traded, and reused, but none of this makes sense unless steel mills and manufacturers of new products demand it. It is the end user who ultimately sustains the entire supply chain: without a market, scrap would have no value, no one would bother collecting it, and it would simply end up discarded or abandoned.

What the Market Demands

The material must be collected, processed, and transported in compliance with regulations, then delivered according to precise specifications. First and foremost, it must be the right size, because properly downsized scrap is easier to handle, less expensive to transport, and allows furnace baskets to be loaded more efficiently. It must also be sorted into categories with a known and consistent composition, so that the end user knows exactly what is being purchased and melted. Finally, it must be clean, in order to reduce emissions and prevent valuable resources from being wasted.

Just look at a pile of bulky, mixed scrap to see how far it is from meeting these requirements. It takes up valuable space, is difficult to handle, and combines materials that should be separated. In that condition, its value is limited.

Where the Transformation Begins

This is where shredding comes into play, representing the first real step in transforming waste into a raw material. Reducing scrap to a uniform size makes it possible to separate it effectively: with appropriate downstream magnetic systems, ferrous metals can be separated from non-ferrous metals and inert materials, allowing each fraction to follow its own recovery path. It also means optimizing loads and transportation, while ensuring a steady and efficient feed to all subsequent stages of the processing plant.

In other words, shredding is the stage at which a disordered material begins to become something the market can recognize and pay for. It is the point where waste starts its transformation into a valuable commodity, meeting the specifications required by steel mills and manufacturers and earning its place within the circular economy.

TAURUS' Answer

DELTA rotary shears were developed specifically for this purpose. Thanks to their counter-rotating shafts, operating at low speed and extremely high torque, they can efficiently reduce large volumes of a wide range of materials: light mixed scrap, municipal collection scrap, depolluted end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), household appliances, bulky waste, and industrial residues.

Over the coming weeks, we will take a closer look at how a rotary shear works, why it is safer than other shredding systems, and the benefits it can bring to an entire processing plant. In the meantime, if you would like to learn how to maximize the value of your scrap, discover the DELTA Rotary Shear and find the solution best suited to your operation.

TAURUS, Your Scrap Solution

Nessuno produce rottame su ordinazione.
